Basic hotkey question

I often want to select an entire model in the real-time view to then move it. I see there’s a hotkey for select model.

I’d love to be able to hold the shift key and just left-click a part and have the entire model be selected. But for whatever reason, I can’t get access to the Mouse Action section here when trying to define a hotkey.

I’m obviously missing something. Either Select Model doesn’t do what I’m hoping it will do or there’s some reason I can’t set the mouse action. I couldn’t find any documentation online about this.

I’d love any pointers here.

This is a great suggestion.

Not sure if this is a pointer but I bound mine to 1, LMB select a part, press 1 and model selected, and press 1 a second time and the Model Set is selected.

Thanks for the feedback! You’re correct that “Select Model” is currently only available as a keyboard shortcut, not as a mouse action. Our mouse click handling and keyboard shortcuts use different systems, which is why you can’t assign Shift+Click through the normal preferences.

Quick clarification: When you say “entire model be selected,” do you mean:

  1. The top-most group of a part, or
  2. The entire model set for the part
  • I’d like to be completely sure what behavior you’re looking for with Shift+Click  .

An extra option could be select parent group (using another bind) ? :

Thanks for chiming in and explaining why the mouse and keyboard shortcuts can’t be combined right now. I’d love to see that change in the future.

More often, I’m looking to quickly select a model or parent quickly from the real-time view, not the model set. Not saying there isn’t value to that, but if I could prioritize these based on frequency of which I’d use them it’d be:

  1. Model
  2. Parent
  3. Model set

Thanks for asking!

I changed some hotkeys for this reason.

Select a part and hit up to “climb the scene tree” to its parent.

Or hit down to jump to the model

This is really clever. Much more intuitive than a somewhat arbitrary hotkey.

I only hesitate doing to much customization of hotkeys as I don’t want to teach something in a tutorial and have people wondering why it’s not working for them. But this may be something I choose to do.

It is a bonus trick for your tutorials. Or a topic for your newsletter “Fast Tracks in Keyshot Studio” - speed up your workflow (you had this a while ago if I remember right).

I learned a lot from your shared knowledge!
Thank you!

Fyi, the default hotkeys for Select Model and Select Parent are 1 and 2 respectively.
These hotkeys were set for the 2025.2 release. If you don’t already have these, then you can click Reset Selection or Reset All to set the defaults in preferences.

Hotkeys are nice but I also still think it would be great to have selection modes that you could toggle in the UI. For Part, Group or Model :slightly_smiling_face:

I appreciate the kind words. It seems like the tables have turned because I feel like I learn something from you here very frequently!

But getting at the core of your hotkey suggestions, making a program as intuitive as possible is very important (in all aspects of design) and so that’s why I like your suggestion in up and down keys as it just seems logical if you understand the scene tree.

Cheers!
